Protecting Our Eyes

William Shakespeare once commented that the eyes are windows to one's soul. Every expression you make that subtly channels out from your eyes instantaneously show what your mind is cogitating. Jealously when you found out that your friend had those Manolo Blahnik (or insert any shoe brand here but I love Blahnik) you have always wanted. Anger for not striving for your very best in everything you do. Disappointment from failing your examinations despite studying extremely hard for it. Sadness when you are being rejected by your crush. Embarrassment from being mocked by your bullies. Our eyes have such an immense and ineffable capability of telling others at that exact moment what our minds are thinking, without having us to use the obvious: our mouths.

The reason why first impression counts is because we use our eyes to judge people. Our eyes possess such a strong power of what society is most illy capable of: judging. The way people present themselves - our eyes narrate the background story about us. Whether or not are we genuinely kind and sincere, or whether we have tricks up our sleeves. Despite our eyes having endowed with such a colossal capacity of weaponizing judgmentalism, it is also our weak spot. It is the weapon where we expose our true, inner selves to others.

That is why sunglasses are made; to cover and conceal.

Some may think that sunglasses are introduced to safeguard our eyes from harmful ultra-violet rays. But for others (aka me), a pair of sunglasses is like a barrier. It is similar to music. We put them on to shield ourselves from additional light, darkening our sight to the environment and the faces of others so that we are in a surreal state. It allows us to leave our stressful realism and live in a fictitious world we build in our minds without anyone discovering what we do best: dream and daydream. We blur out our vision with heavily protected sunglasses so that we can live in our idealistic and imaginary lives without being disturbed by others.

Donning on a pair of sunglasses is akin to incognito. We disguise ourselves so that no one could immediately recognise us. We hide our eyes so that no one could see to our souls and disclose us. The sunglasses act as an 'invisible' boundary that demarcates us from reality. If we do not wish to deal with people, we put them on to feign ignorance. If we are down, we just pull our sunglasses out from our bags and slide them onto our faces and tuck them neatly above our ears. They are like the most perfect concealer for unwanted eye bags.

Why do we wear sunglasses? Are we really in desperate need for something to shield us from reality? Or do we simply think they are stylish?

When I put on my used and abused Cheap Monday semi cat-eyed sunglasses, it gives me a look that is unachievable if I don't express it with my eyes. They make me look classy and elegant yet stern and unapproachable. It just simply means that I desire my own personal space. I wouldn't be able to do that without having to strain my eyes and glare at people (and then lead to unwanted attention). They are there to help me obtain that false front look that masks what I'm actually feeling: sorrow and disappointment. You can force a smile without being exposed by your eyes.

Sunglasses are essential in our every day lives. Without them, we are unable to protect our eyes from those harmful UV rays and unwanted attention. They have become such a necessity in our lives that it is inevitable for us not to own one. They are like man's (and woman's) inanimate best friend.

Kudos to the creator of sunglasses.
