Favourites From Fashion Week

Even though I titled this as 'from Fashion Week', but the truth is, everything is going to be about Theyskens' Theory. Not. It'll be a few selected shows I really love. And I have no idea what that black frame around my picture collages are all about; the models were supposed to be floating in mid air, but let's just deal with this.

First up, Theyskens' Theory. With the theme 'futuristic',  I could see how he was able to use the concept of spacesuits into completing a show, without the expense of his well-known 'minimalistic contemporary androgynous wear' (see furthest right look, spacesuit inspired trousers that still retains simplicity).

Highlights from the show: Knee high black leather booties with elongated zippers running down the sides, I love how Olivier Theyskens keeps his designs fashionable yet sleek and sophisticated at the same time. His loosely, yet somewhat tapered-esque trousers (see last two looks) also caught my attention because A) I'm a trousers whore, B) those are the perfect, relaxed trousers I should possess, and C) Very Theory. Very New York girl meets French chic.

I am still clueless to why people (I know and met) are disliking 3.1 Phillip Lim this season. On the contrary, I kinda like it. His recent collection gave me the downtown suburb girl having a closet intervention by revamping the accustomed 'biker chic black' with colours and textures.

Highlights from the show: I would like to say their Knee high combat booties as well, but nah, their overly patchwork is way better. Even though the far end looks still resembles slight uptown girls, but with a combat bootie and a bag slinged sideways? Uptown girls have finally decided to channel their inner downtown. And can we talk about looks two and three from left? Phillip Lim's newly edition (or was the design already constructed?) Ryder bag in green/coloured fur, definitely something I would purchase.

Besides Theory, I've always looked forward (am still looking forward though) to Topshop Unique shows as well. Just because Topshop is one of my favourite high street brands, as well as their Unique lines that always look fabulous. That's why it's 'unique', duh (pun intended in every way).

Highlights from the show: Patent leather skirts that exude the disco feel. Lots of oversized skirts played in this show, with the combination of crop pullovers (furryyyy) or otherwise collared jumpsuits. Did I just mentioned jumpsuits? Mmmm hmmm gurl, we all do need a little onesies at times (see here).

Cavalli has decided to use bhutanese prints (tons of dragons and temple-esque feel, wanted to say oriental but style.com told me it was bhutanese). Something that I like about Just Cavalli is that Roberto is smart enough to transpose such delicate and opulent print into the most simple garment (like a dress or a tee). Well done with the print overdose!

Highlights from the show: Their printed one piece dress (second from left) and fur collared parka (see here) were literally ineffable. Finally a parka that allows it to be distinguishable from the plethora of utilitarian green ones. A parka that I would definitely wear. The dragon motif tee (second from right) is also something my closet is screaming to have.

Now I need a closet intervention. The love-hate relationship with fashion week.

Theyskens' Theory

Theyskens' Theory has been one of my favourite labels ever since I chanced upon the Pre-Fall 2012 collection. Inspired by the Jellyfish (yes the ocean illuminating creature with devastating tentacles) as said by Olivier Theyskens, this collection will be filled with lots of sparkling sequins and pastel colours, as well as darker colours, which includes black and navy, which somewhat represents the stormy seas.

As famously remarked by Anna Dello Russo, 'Wear a coat as a dress' (I think I need to stop quoting), the Coat Dress (or is it Dress Coat?) has appeared in his show this season. The minimalistic, clean cut silhouette with prominent shoulder pads managed to successfully accentuate the elegance in women.

And then there's oversized coats. God, let me just hyperventilate for a moment, because I'm totally in love with the coats on Look 1 & 3!!!!! This design somewhat reminisces the coat Alexander McQueen once designed, which I think it's vintage because I saw it in one of the fashion books in my school's library. And the books there are always vintage. Okay I really need those coats now I shall not stare at them anymore omg.

Elegant and classy. Theyskens has never failed to inject the sophisticated look into the womenswear collection he creates. And they are always ready-to-wear (no pun intended) at any point of time. Looks 3, 4 and 5 may be more of an evening wear compared to a daily look, but you can easily turn it around by pairing them up with a bright coloured blazer and the perfect gladiator wedges.

The Trousers. And Suits. Here is the destination where menswear shake hands with women. The classic, slim fit trousers have officially taken a toll on me, and I am stacking them in piles (more like heaps) till the fact that they cause a spillover. Ohwell, what can I do when I get hooked onto gorgeous suits... Looking too formal? Fashionable office wear, perhaps? Or maybe not when you have a sequinned jacket on.

I guess I only filled out this post with the seas instead of the jellyfish. Maybe only 4 jellyfishes to be exact. But you can always check out the whole collection from here.

Rebecca Minkoff

Okay it's getting really cliché for me to go like 'Omg those pants, omg this, omg that.' when I watch fashion shows, so I'm really going to stop doing that at the start of every post from now on. Or maybe not, because the opening outfit in Rebecca Minkoff is just... Let's just have a moment of silence for it. Everything is just too perfect, and flawless, with the ombré floral print that falls at the hem of the trousers, the colours used, and the cropped white oversized/boxy shirt. The whole outfit portrays a little bit of serenity and femininity, yet giving a slight sexiness by showing a little skin (think naval). 

My critic? LOVE THE SHIRT, LOVE THE PANTS, I WANT EVERYTHING ON HER NOW!

And then the tropical and floral trend remain perpetual for many spring/summer seasons, but they always never looked the same. Ironic much, but mixing it with a past trend certainly brings the outfit to a whole new level. And with embroidered floral details with a matching biker vest and a man-repelling turban-esque bandana? Hmmm, bring the outfit to meeeeeee, I would totally rock it. ♥

Perhaps too hot for the summer heat, but who could ever resist the transcending of ombré blue to brown vest that somewhat resembles the beach/resort feel? Paring it up with a simple tee, or an ocean-printed one with it would be totally perfect for a summer outfit, maybe to the beach. Or maybe just for spring. But who really cares when you've become a fashion victim? Perhaps the heat would be our worse enemy. Maybe that's why we all need a cute shorts, like the grey drawstring ones, to beat off the summer heat.

Helmut Lang

Here are a few of my favourite pieces from Helmut Lang this season. When the show first opened with the first outfit (the top one), I was like 'Damn the shoe (forever the first thing I will see), damn the coat, damn the pants, damn the colour!!' Everything was just perfect. Perfect for a casual day outfit, especially for weather like Singapore (uck), a lightweight coat do come in handy at times when you just, you know, want to cake yourself in fancy outerwear without compromising the comfort. 

And then the mixture of fabrics and the short sleeved jacket. Basically I'm not a huge fan of short-sleeved outer wears. I'm more of the 'Give me the full sleeve or give me none' sort of person. But I guess the look really captivated me (look 2) with it's simpleness yet edgy ready to wear. I'm sort of a bipolar dresser. I can go to the extreme with fancy dowry (think jewelry if more comfortable) like Anna Dello Russo but I can go casual chic at times like Alexa Chung or Emmanuelle Alt.

Okay so floral has completely taken over the Spring and Summer trends. But the mixture of Floral with Jacquard? Nicole and Michael Colovos sure has gotten my approval. Okay, it's not like as though I'm some big shot or what for them to obtain my approval, but I'm totally IN LOVE with Jacquard items. Plus, they look like gorgeous baroque prints from far, so... Whoo-hoo!!! I'm screaming for the pants, the shorts, the shoessss (even though it's not relevant to the topic here)!

And the idea of Bomber Jackets? Just BOMB gurlllll!

Whoooooo, bright colours!!! Extremely man repelling (think Leandra Medine from manrepeller, in total love with her!!) for someone who wears such outstanding colours out on the streets. Maybe not approved by a non-fashionista type of person, or someone who abides to full black outfits, but for someone like me (a fashion whore victim, of course), I would totally rock these three looks. Maybe I would even do some colour blocking (think look 2 with look 3's jacket, or look's 2 pullover with look 3's skirt). And with matching heels (look 2)? I can't even think of any other words to say. 

Perhaps I'm just crazy, but 3-inch heels (or is it two? I can't really tell), which are something that turns me off if they don't hit at least four, surprisingly didn't turn me off this time round. It's because I'm totally in love with the design of it. Period.

Pardon me for the lack of updates, basically because I was having my preliminary examinations! And the best part, New York Fashion Week happens to coincide with my examination week (not on the exact same dates but still,.. what a coincidence!).. Not that I stay in New York or what (hopefully I was) that I missed the shows, but it's a matter of fact that I can't participate in some fashion shows in Singapore because of my exams! Ugh, the sacrifices we make. Perseverance! 3 more months left before I'm free from my stress-inducing 2 year course. But fret not, I shall do a review on some of my favourite looks/shows to make up the loss (hopefully it'll be exciting)!
