The Signature Piece

There are things that we strive for. Clothes, shoes, cars, apartments, holiday trips, that Wagyu beef steak you didn't have, you wanted to taste that spilled Pinot Noir circa 1950s on your newly purchased white blouse (which btw, the blouse was OOS when you wore it out), and the list just goes on. We are stuck with a perpetual (which in simple term, means endless) list of things that we want in our lives. This insurmountable list of 'Wants' indirectly propels us to believe that it is the most complex and not easily comprehensible things that brings us the most joy. But in contrary, we all just need that item we deem as signature to keep us satisfied with our lives. Because we are constantly in search for this perfect item, it kicks start our hearts (and minds and then hands) to begin our adventure.

I believe the aforementioned strongly relates to that signature piece of clothing you'll-wear-even-till-your-grave you have been scouring for (or if you managed to find it, congratulations!). This is why we are down with choices. Choices to pick whether it should be a pair of denim jeans or a leather jacket. Choices to contemplate on either a black or brown leather jacket.

Because we are constantly stuck with choices that allows us to fully optimize our decision making skills that would evidently pave our own paths, we are bound to come to a juncture where we scratch our heads (or horse weaves in my case, pun intended) and thoughtfully ponder: "Which jacket should I take?"

Don't you think it could be easier if you could pull your answer (aka signature clothing) out from your head? Like Janis and Damian from Mean Girls once commented: "Gretchen Wieners knows everybody's business, she knows everything about everyone. That's why her hair is so big, it's full of secrets." We just hope that she doesn't know any of our businesses and secrets and instead, replace them with our signature clothing.

What if we pick the wrong choice? What if that brown leather jacket could be our signature piece but instead, we chose black? Indeed, brown leather jackets can be found prevalently in almost every other leather store (or Acne Studios, or Zara), but it eventually is different. The cut, the texture, the color tone, even down to the intricate details like the lining and stitching, would never be the same as the piece you've missed. It's like the one that got away. Unless you managed to chance upon it in a vintage shop, but that would take about approximately ten years.

So how can we firmly place our bets on deeming what is our signature piece of garment? The answer to that is we can't. Fashion, like life, is in constant motion. Fashion is always about changing up to a new look for an incoming season. Life, similarly, is also about subtle modifications. We all adjust and adapt to suit our changing environment. We bring in (or revisit re-editions) new trends to welcome the ever-changing season. If we are all about continual change, do you think it will be possible for us to come to a halt and say "Hey, I'm going to wear this jacket everyday because it is my signature look."

Maybe yes, maybe no. I could only balance on the fence right now because there are people who were able to wear their signature clothing everyday because it is a piece that demarcates them from the rest. As for me, I think it might be a personal challenge. My signature item now would be this Vivienne Westwood purse, but in another few months time, it might be the flare jeans, or a navy crew neck t-shirt.
